Orangutans of Tanjung Puting NP

DEPARTING FROM:Pangkalan BunFINAL DESTINATION:Pangkalan Bun

DURATION:5 Days/ 4 NightsREGION:AsiaSHIP:WOW Borneo Kumai

Cruise into the famed orangutan-rich Tanjung Puting Park aboard WOW Borneo's wooden boat Kumai. The vessel has just three air conditioned cabins with en suite, and departs on scheduled cruises every Saturday and Tuesday.

The three main areas in the park for observing orangutans are Camp Leakey, Pondok Tanggui and Tanjung Harapan. At these sites, guests take an easy walk through the forest to feeding platforms to observe orangutans coming in to take advantage of supplementary food provided by authorities. We also may glimpse  wild orangutans and proboscis monkeys along the river sides during the cruise. These are wild and we are advised not to approach them too closely and to follow the guide’s instruction at all times in the forest.

To reach the feeding platforms we walk about 10-30 minutes through the forest from the port and the visit is for a maximum of 2 hours in each station. It is estimated that there are about 3000 orangutans in Tanjung Puting National Park area.

Camera usage is permitted. However, operating drone and filmmaking for commercial purposes need further permission from the Tanjung Puting National Park authority.

In Tanjung Puting, WOW Borneo works closely with the National Parks Authority to operate responsible cruises and to adhere to all guidelines. All Park permits are paid by WOW Borneo.

WOW Borneo Kumai

WOW Borneo Kumai

Operated by: WOW Borneo

WOW Borneo’s newest boat, the six-passenger, 19-metre Kumai was originally a fishing boat but has now been remodelled to offer true small ship expedition cruises into the orangutan-rich Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesia Borneo. Named after the river it operates from, Kumai's cabins are the Superior Large with a small terrace on the bow, a Double Cabin, and a Twin cabin. The deck has plenty of space to enjoy the river views from the comfort of rattan sofas and sun lounges, ideal to spot orangutans and proboscis monkeys high in the forest canopy. This boat has all of the features which set WOW Borneo apart from the others – air-conditioned cabins powered by solar panels, en suite in each cabin, spacious unimpeded viewing decks, and great food. Cruises are accompanied by three crew and an English-speaking guide.

The cabins are fitted with inner-spring mattresses, reading lights, sheets, pillows, bedcovers, towels, and basic toiletries. The cabin windows have mosquito netting and sliding shutters for privacy. Cameras and phones can be charged on board, and the viewing deck and all cabins have sockets. The deck has waterproof blinds with clear inserts for rainy periods.

Itineraries are samples only. Cruise itineraries are subject to seasonal river conditions. Dry season conditions may cause alterations to the itineraries. Note that, depending on your arrival time in Pangkalan Bun, the program may change to fit with orangutan feeding times. However over the course of your visit, we will visit the forest locations described, but in a different order. We recommend that you purchase comprehensive accident, medical, baggage and trip cancellation/interruption.

Upon confirmation, Wow Borneo will need to know your arrival and departure flight details in order to have you at the port/airport in time. Or you could opt to arrive and/or depart a day earlier. In this case, please let us know your hotel details and we will pick you up from the Lobby at 8.30 AM on the first day of the cruise, and/or transfer you there at the end of the cruise.

We will also need copies of your passport photo pages (official requirements) at least five working days before your trip so that we have sufficient time to apply for the park entry tickets.

We advise guests to bring insect repellent, sun hats, sunscreen, and covered walking shoes. It is best to wear long sleeves and trousers in the forest (dull colors, not black, which attracts mosquitoes). As there are no towns or villages along the route, please bring all personal medications. We provide drinking water and reusable water bottles but do not have soda water or alcohol on board. Guests are welcome to bring these along. Let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.
